William C. Gray

Bill received his law degree from Harvard Law School and his undergraduate degree from Indiana University.  During his career, he has represented a wide spectrum of clients, including Fortune 500 companies, politicians, entrepreneurs, and the wrongfully accused. More importantly, Bill has taken on, and favorably handled, cases against Fortune 500 companies, insurance companies, and the government. Prior to founding Gray LLC, Bill worked as an attorney at Sidley Austin LLP and was the group chair of a class action boutique.

Bill focuses his practice solely on cases that have meaning, both to him and his clients. For several years, he founded and grew a portfolio of companies that spanned across several industries.  While finding entrepreneurship rewarding and continuing to maintain an ownership interest in several companies, the reward creating change through the legal process was unparalleled.


Bill enjoys cases that are difficult to win and that face substantial hurdles.  He served as lead counsel to former Governor Rod Blagojevich and successfully argued on his behalf before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.  In that case, Bill achieved a reversal of the district court's decision, resulting in the dismissal of all civil RICO allegations, which sought over $100,000,000 in damages.


Bill has litigated class actions across the country and has been appointed lead counsel in cases spanning across a variety of industries. Through his cases, consumers have received benefits approaching 10 figures.  Further, his cases have resulted in industry-wide changes.


For years, Bill collaborated with author John Grisham, the Northwestern Center on Wrongful Convictions, and a consortium of attorneys on behalf of wrongfully-accused individuals.  He has handled criminal matters in the trial and appellate courts on accusations ranging from causing a riot to interstate gunrunning.


Bill was a member of Criminal Code Commentary Committee for the country of Kosovo, responsible for helping to assist the newly-formed country create a system based on the rule of law.  He also has served on the Illinois State Bar Association Standing Committee on the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Committee.


At Harvard, he was a research assistant for Professor Alan Dershowitz and was an editor of the Harvard Blackletter Law Journal.  At Indiana University, he was elected Student Body President by the campus's 40,000 students and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.


Bill and his work have appeared in media throughout the country, including USA Today, NBC, CBS, and the Chicago Tribune. He has been an invited guest on many shows, such as the The O'Reilly Factor, MSNBC, and Fox News.
